VISIONFEST celebration on Wednesday, August 20th.
Aug 18, 2008
ANGELES – Filmmakers Alliance
will bestow its coveted Vision Award to filmmaker KEVIN SMITH as well as the
inaugural Nilsson Award to the award’s namesake, filmmaker ROB NILSSON at its annual
on Wednesday, August 20th. The yearly event, which brings together the best of
Los Angeles’ independent filmmaking community, will take place at 7:00 pm at
the Directors Guild of America, 7920 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
Vision Award is presented to established filmmakers whose artistic ambition and/or
contribution to independent film inspires emerging filmmakers around the world.
Past recipients include Mike Figgis, Terry Gilliam, Wim Wenders, Allison
Anders, Alexander Payne, Werner Herzog and David O. Russell.
SMITH is, quite simply, an indie film icon - having helped spawn an entire generation
of DIY filmmakers with his first feature, “Clerks”.
His humorous, idiosyncratic world-view is present in all of his successive
features including, “Chasing Amy”, “Dogma”, “Clerks II” and the upcoming “Zack
and Miri Make A Porno”. Although his success has brought him uncomfortably
close to Hollywood's orbit, he has always maintained a defiant individuality
and endearing unconventionality. However, his contribution to independent film
extends beyond his own filmmaking work, including Executive Producing the
documentaries, “Reel Paradise” and “Small Town Gay Bar”, as well as the
VERY indie features, “A Better Place”,
“Drawing Flies”, “Big Helium Dog”, and “Vulgar”.
NILSSON has been a prolific, dynamic, visionary and fiercely independent
filmmaker for many years and shows no sign of slowing down. From his
breath-taking first film, “Northern
Lights” to his Sundance Jury Award-Winning “Heat and Sunlight” to his searing, epic “9@Night” Series, every frame of Mr. Nilsson's films are touched by
the hand of a true master and poet. This is no lifetime achievement award, this
is a shout of recognition and encouragement or an on-going creative journey
from which all emerging filmmakers can and should gain immense inspiration.
