The Method Fest is the nation's only film festival designed to celebrate actors
by Erik Sean McGiven on Apr 20, 2008
The Method Fest is the nation's only film festival designed
to celebrate actors and acting. And the
selection of "Unfinished Sky" is auspicious addition to this
festival.
<>The festival's executive director Don Franken said when he
first saw this film he had to have this Australian production in Method Fest
and pulled a lot of strings to include it in the program. "Unfinished Sky" stars Australian
actor William McInnes (Look Both Ways) and Dutch actress Monic Henrickx (A
Moving True Story of A Woman Ahead of Her Time). And stars they are as they pull you into this
story with a subtle yet stupendous acting.
<>
The story is about John, an outback farmer (McInnes), who
takes in Tahmeena, an Afghani woman (Hendrickx), who has fled from a brothel
where she was being held captive. Of
course, the story doesn't unfold so easily instead it peels back like the
layers of an onion, each layer more fascinating than the last.
<>
When Tahmeena stumbles down a dusty road to John's farm, he
has no choice but to take her in. She's
been badly beaten and speaks no English.
John is a loner and not inclined to welcome visitors, much less the
police. There's a reason he does not
trust them.
<>
The two communicate through signs, pictures, and a gradual
understanding of each other's language.
These are two broken souls and slowly they began to recover their faith
in themselves and their trust in humanity.
<>
Tahmeena brings John's home back to life and makes him aware
of its potential. In return, John
attempts to track down the daughter Tahmeena sent ahead from war-ravaged
Afganistan. Throughout the film there is
the uneasiness that Tahmeena will be caught and taken back to the brothel. There are close calls, blunders, plus their
desire to step out from the sanctuary of the farm.
<>
The script by director Peter Duncan in interwoven nicely
revealing only what is needed to get to the plot twist. While there is exposition, it unravels
beautifully building a precarious relationship between two people teetering
between trust and mistrust. At the spine
tingling ending, all the loose ends are neatly tied up in flurry of death
defining struggles.
<>
The title, "Unfinished Sky" refers to a puzzle
John found among is dead wife's things and in her memory he attempts to
complete it. It is a symbolic entity
that plays an important role in the story: holding on vs. letting go.
<>
"Unfinished Sky" is a powerful, poetic and sensual
love story that peels away layers of pain and mistrust to reveal the true beauty
of humanity: freedom, hope and choice.
